Mark Steele
Listening to the Grain
Mark Steele’s furniture occupies the space between nature and design, revealing the inherent
beauty of wood through a practice grounded in precision and master craftsmanship. Rather
than obscuring the material’s natural character, Steele works in collaboration with it, bringing
the grain, texture, and organic variations of each piece to the forefront.
Steele’s Triple Helix center foyer table, crafted in ash and brass with an oil finish, exemplifies this
approach. The piece draws attention to the natural grain of the ash and Steele’s ability to
manipulate it into a flowing structure that guides the eye along its sensuous curves. Left
unstained and finished only with oil, the wood retains its organic character, giving the
impression that the table has been carved directly from the trunk of a tree. Its intertwining
forms evoke the structure of a tree’s own DNA, suggesting a continuity between the material’s
natural origins and its transformation through the artist’s hand.
Across the collection, organic forms meet geometric structures, creating a dynamic dialogue
between the irregularity of nature and the discipline of human construction. Curved edges,
flowing lines, and natural contours are balanced by carefully considered angles and architectural
forms, allowing each work to feel both grounded and refined.
At the heart of Steele’s practice is an exceptional attention to detail. Every surface, joint, and
proportion reflects a commitment to craftsmanship in which function and artistry are
inseparable. The resulting furniture is more than utilitarian, it is an exploration of material,
form, and process, celebrating the distinctive qualities of wood while demonstrating the
transformative possibilities of the skilled hand.
