Shifting Tides
In Shifting Tides, Roderick Hidalgo continues to explore resin as a creative medium and
has developed unique ways to play with light and texture. Hidalgo uses resin, acrylic, and glass
to warp aspects of the pieces to create shifting compositions reminiscent of moving liquid.
Color, too, shifts with the viewer's perspective as the pieces are viewed from different angles;
blues that were once greens and reds that were once yellows are revealed. Hidalgo deftly
employs self-made resin techniques to achieve his impressive compositions, reflecting his
evolving artistic skills.
Aristotle's Window is a shining example of all the shifting elements
Hidalgo creates. The piece itself looks as if it might be liquid, the resin pressed beneath the
yellow acrylic sheet, eliciting the effect of a gentle green tide. This layering allows for that
mesmerizing shifting of light and color that Hidalgo composes. The yellow glass hemisphere,
too, adds an eye-popping element that literally brings the viewer into the piece via reflection.
Ancestral Ring utilizes similar techniques and highlights Hidalgo’s mediums'
versatility and his boundless ingenuity. In this piece, a glass hemisphere sits on the horizon of a
green resin sea and a metallic green encaustic sunset. Like in Aristotle's Window, Hidalgo flexes
his ability to create depth and texture and his eye for light and form.
This show aims to shine a spotlight on Hidalgo’s shift into even more immersive and
complex work. Hidalgo has not only refined his mastery of resin, acrylic, and glass but has also
demonstrated significant growth as an artist. His innovative techniques and ability to
manipulate light and texture reveal a maturity and confidence in his craft. Pieces like Aristotle's
Window and Ancestral Ring exemplify his progression, showcasing intricate layers and dynamic
compositions that invite viewers to engage with the work from multiple perspectives. Hidalgo’s
evolving artistic journey is evident in the complexity and sophistication of his creations,
solidifying his place as a distinctive and evolving voice in the contemporary art world.
